ABSTRACT: Inclusive Design is design that includes the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of human difference. The first talk will provide an overview of the principles and techniques of Inclusive Design and how it has been applied by the Fluid open source community to create uniquely personalized user experiences for the open web.

In order to include people who lack full sensory channel resolution (all of us, at some time in our lives), it's smart to consider the value that captioning and video description bring to the burgeoning amount of video now on the Web. The provincial government has recently rolled out the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act’s Information and Communications Standard. The AODA legislates a need for compliance with these and other inclusive digital practices by the public and private sectors. Rob and Charles will address this topic in the second half.

BIOS:
Colin Clark is the Lead Software Architect at OCAD University's Inclusive Design Research Centre (www.inclusivedesign.ca). He is a co-founder of the Fluid Project, an open source community dedicated to improving the usability and accessibility of the open web, and currently serves as its Technical Lead. Colin is a contributor to a number of open source projects including jQuery UI, and is the author of the Flocking music framework. He is an expert in designing accessible, web-based user interface architectures that can be personalized to fit the diverse needs and preferences of users.

Rob Harvie brings a rich background in IT and accessibility solutions. At University of Toronto for the previous decade, he directed Information Technology Services with the iSchool, taught on human-computer interaction and emerging technologies including augmented reality and multi-sensory interfaces at the Institute for Communications, Culture and IT (ICCIT) program, and worked with the Adaptive Technology Resource Centre on various federally-funded research initiatives. Rob continues his lecturing at the University of Toronto and still serves sporadically on the executive of TorCHI. He is currently co-directing Inclusive Media and Design Inc (www.inclusivemedia.ca), a three year old company that has  been providing captioning, video description, and related services as well as tools and consulting.

Charles Silverman is the other co-director/founder of Inclusive Media and Design. He has been in the adaptive technology field for almost 30 years. For the last 10 years his main focus has been accessible media on the web, specifically captioning and descriptive video. Charles teaches Ryerson University’s School for Disability Studies where he focuses on accessibility, technology, and Inclusive and Universal Design. Previously he worked with CAST in Boston, and has partnered with the National Center for Accessible Media at WGBH. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) and the Abilities Arts Festival. Charles relies on captioned media, as he has a severe to profound hearing loss and understands all too well the need for fully accessible media.
