Software that provides advice is becoming more common. Applications range the mundane choices of everyday life to complex tasks performed by experts. The challenge for UX designers is to understand the psychology of advice-seeking and advice-giving then adapting that to UX design. This session shares knowledge on advisor design in various forms: design examples, design guidelines/patterns, primary user research, and published research. Exercises will provide the opportunity for hands-on learning. 

Paul McInerney has over 15 years of industry experience as a usability and user experience specialist. He works at IBM on products used by IT administrators.  He has designed and evaluated advisor tools and has written a design pattern that distills the invariant attributes of successful advisor tools. Paul has written or presented on broad range of UX/UCD topics from integrating Agile with UX practices to supporting multiple user strategies in a product's UX. 

Rick Sobiesiak has worked at IBM in user-experience research, design and evaluation of enterprise software for over 20 years. He has held both management and senior technical roles, and enjoys bridging the world of applied research with the pragmatic concerns of product development. Much of his recent focus has been on developing and evangelizing the quantification of software usability through complexity analysis.  His most recent projects have spanned cloud computing (dashDB, BLU Acceleration for Cloud) and the PureSystems family of pre-integrated appliances.
